Martha’s Vineyard Physical Therapy (MVPT) was founded by Michael Mailey, who recognized the island’s need for a personalized, home-based physical therapy service. At MVPT, our mission is to deliver a comprehensive cycle of care -providing prompt treatment for pain and injury while emphasizing lifestyle modification, preventative therapy, and in-home environmental assessments tailored to each individual.
A native of Donegal, Ireland, Michael earned his physiotherapy degree from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland. He also holds an honors BSc in Sports Injury Therapy from the University of Bedfordshire, England, and advanced diplomas from the London School of Sports Massage.
While in Bedfordshire, Michael worked with professional road cyclists and elite British velodrome athletes specializing in the 1-kilometer sprint. He later worked at the Scottish National Spinal Rehabilitation Unit in Glasgow with Paralympic contenders, before transitioning to major trauma centers in Lanarkshire and Edinburgh as a Senior Outpatient Orthopedic Therapist. He advanced his expertise through the Society of Orthopaedic Medicine’s curriculum and collaborated with surgeons at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh to co-author the Gold Standard Rehabilitation Guidelines for multi-ligament and ACL knee repairs.
Michael’s career also includes work with Scottish Premiership soccer teams and Rugby Union clubs, contributing to a Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup win during his tenure. In Fife, he served as a Chronic Pain Management Therapist at the Carnegie Clinic, where he implemented a pilot program that was later submitted to the Scottish Parliament and nationally recognized as an effective strategy for chronic pain treatment.
